By Line Officer Craig Penuel
February 18, 2022

Frank W. Friz, age 79, husband of Dolores A. (Chup) Friz, of Gilbertsville, died on February 16, 2022.

Born in Boyertown, he was the son of the late Frank R. and Virginia M. (Nagel) Friz.

Frank was a 1960 graduate of Boyertown High School and earned a B.S. degree in mathematics in 1964 from Juniata College, and a Masters of Education in 1966 from Temple University.

He was a former math teacher and chairman of the math department at Boyertown High School, where he introduced calculus to the curriculum. He was an industrial engineer at Firestone Tire & Rubber in Pottstown for eleven years until the plant closed. He then worked as an industrial engineer and production engineer for several companies, including Agere Systems in Reading, until 2001. Prior to his retirement, he was a math instructor at Sylvan Learning Center. He also owned and operated Friz Nurseries for approximately 30 years.

Frank was actively involved with emergency services. He was an emergency services dispatcher for seventeen years at the former Boyertown Communications Center, and also served as the Chief Dispatcher for ten years. He was a life member of and first training officer for the Collegeville Fire Co., and a life member of and first training officer for the Gilbertsville Fire Co., serving those two organizations for more than thirty years as an active firefighter. He was the recipient of the very first Fire Chief's award given annually by the Collegeville Fire Co.

Frank was recognized by many as an outstanding mathematician. While in high school, he garnered several second and third place awards in a national math contest in Chicago, sponsored by the Future Engineers of America. He was known to perform calculations in his head faster than most people using calculators.

He enjoyed dancing, hunting, working outdoors, his electric trains, and spending time with his family, including Thanksgiving dinners, his annual Christmas Eve party, and many years of summer doggie-roasts at his much-loved "bungalow" in Salford Station.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 53 years are two daughters, Rebecca F. Nester, wife of Benjamin Nester, of Oley; and Tami L. Heydt, wife of Todd Heydt, of Fleetwood; and a son, Russell J. Friz, husband of Denise Friz, of Boyertown. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jake Friz, companion of Paige Shawell, Megan Heydt, Ryan Heydt, Leah Friz, and Nina Nester, and two great-grandchildren, Sophia Friz and Cole Friz. Also surviving is a sister, Trudy Lederer, of San Diego.

Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Monday, February 21, 2022 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Morrell Funeral Home, 124 West Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, PA. An additional viewing will be held from 9:30 am to 10:30 am on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 with a celebration of his life beginning at 10:30 am. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Collegeville Fire Company.
